A Perfect Saturday in Mapleton: The Ultimate Family Itinerary

by Lori Collins

If you’re looking for a place where the pace of life slows down just enough to actually enjoy the scenery, you’ll find it here in Mapleton. Nestled right against the base of the mountains, Mapleton has earned a reputation as one of Utah County’s "best-kept secrets" for families. It’s a community where the trails are accessible, the parks are historic, and the mountain views follow you everywhere you go.

If you’re planning a family day out—or if you’re considering making this beautiful city your home—here is the perfect way to spend a Saturday in Mapleton.

9:00 AM | Morning Energy at Mapleton City Park

Start your morning at the Mapleton City Park (located at the corner of Main and Maple Street). This isn't just a playground; it’s the heart of the community.

  • The Vibe: Massive, mature trees provide incredible shade even in the heat of July.

  • For the Kids: The playground is modern and expansive, offering plenty of room for kids of all ages to burn off some morning energy.

  • Pro-Tip: Bring a camera! The historic gazebo and the backdrop of Maple Mountain make this one of the most photogenic spots in the valley for a quick family photo.

11:00 AM | Wheels Up on the Mapleton Parkway Trail

After the park, grab the bikes, scooters, or the stroller. The Mapleton Parkway Trail is a local treasure. Unlike some of the more rugged canyon trails nearby, this paved path is flat, wide, and incredibly safe for "little wheels."

As you walk or ride, you’ll pass through quiet neighborhoods and open fields with unobstructed views of the Wasatch Range. It’s the perfect way to get some fresh air without the "are we there yet?" fatigue of a steep hike.

1:00 PM | Picnic & Play at Ira Allen Park

Head south to Ira Allen Park for lunch. This is Mapleton’s "action" hub. If there’s a youth soccer or baseball game happening, the energy is infectious.

  • Pickleball Fever: Mapleton recently expanded the pickleball complex here to 14 courts. It’s a fantastic way to introduce the kids to a sport that’s easy to learn and fun for all ages.

  • The Picnic Spot: There are several pavilions and plenty of open grass. If the wind is right, this is also the premier spot in town for flying kites.

3:00 PM | A Quick Dip into Mapleton Canyon

Before the day ends, take a five-minute drive east into Mapleton Canyon toward the Whiting Campground area. You don't need to be an expert hiker to enjoy this. There are several easy access points to the stream where kids can skip stones or splash in the shallow water. It’s a great way to cool off and feel like you’re miles away from civilization, even though you’re just minutes from home.

Why We Love Mapleton

Mapleton offers a unique "semi-rural" feel that is becoming harder to find in Utah County. You get the large lots and the quiet streets, but you’re still only 10 minutes away from the shopping and dining in Spanish Fork or the arts and culture of Springville.

Whether you’re visiting for the day or looking for a permanent "home base," Mapleton’s charm is impossible to ignore.
