Why Whiting Campground is a Local Favorite

by Lori Collins

While many travelers head further north or south, Whiting remains a staple for Utah County residents for its accessibility and shade. In the peak of July, when the valley floor is sweltering, the temperature at Whiting feels like a different world.

The Layout

The campground is thoughtfully designed with a mix of sites to fit almost any group:

  • 18 Single Sites: Perfect for a quick weekend getaway.

  • 8 Double Sites: For those camping with the extended family.

  • 2 Massive Group Sites: These can accommodate between 100 and 200 people, making them a go-to for reunions and ward parties.

  • Equestrian Sites: Unlike many local spots, Whiting features three sites with hitching racks specifically for those who explore the Wasatch on horseback.

Gateway to the High Country

For many, Whiting is the "Base Camp" for some of the best recreation in the district.

  • The Maple Canyon Trail: Starting right near the campground, this trail is a hub for hikers, mountain bikers, and dirt bikers.

  • The "Spanish Fork Peak" Connection: If you’re feeling ambitious, the trail system here eventually connects to the grueling climb up to Spanish Fork Peak (Maple Mountain).

  • Springtime Blooms: If you visit in early summer, the meadows surrounding the campground are carpeted in wildflowers.

Essential "Know Before You Go" for 2026

Camping in the Wasatch requires a little bit of strategy. Here are the updated tips for your 2026 trip:

  1. Water Strategy: While there is a perennial creek nearby, potable water is limited. It’s always best to bring your own water for drinking and cooking to be safe.

  2. Bear Country: Yes, even this close to town! Whiting is active bear territory. The Forest Service is strict about food storage—use the provided lockers or keep your food locked in a hard-sided vehicle.

  3. The Gate Rule: Remember that the gate at the mouth of the canyon opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 10:00 PM. If you’re visiting for the day, make sure you’re out before the lock turns!

  4. No Dump Station: There are vault toilets, but no hookups or dump stations for RVs. It’s a "dry camping" experience for the big rigs.

Planning Your Visit

The campground typically operates from mid-May through mid-September. Because of its popularity with locals, weekends fill up fast. You can book your spot through Recreation.gov—reservations usually open 6 months in advance, so if you're eyeing a July 4th trip, now is the time to look!

Local Pro-Tip: Even if you aren't camping, Whiting is one of the best spots in the county for Fall Colors. The canyon glows in brilliant reds and oranges during late September.
